Drug Maladministration

It is possible to suffer effects following administration of drugs during the course of treatment.  This can be because there has been an overdose of drugs or an under dosage, both of which can be harmful.  It can also mean that drugs were given inappropriately that is that drugs given to one patient were meant for another or that they were administered in the wrong way such that drugs which should have been given orally were given intravenously.

The National Patient Safety Agency has stated that there are over 40,000 mistakes made in medication errors every year most of which cause no harm but 2,000 on average lead to moderate or severe harm and can, in rare cases, lead to death.

In this study it was stated that more needed to be done to discuss side effects with patients and to give written information which is required by law and to minimise risk from injected drugs.

There have been a number of cases which have made newspaper headlines where patients have received cancer drugs which have been given either inadequately or inappropriately which have subsequently caused death.  It is not however only severe cases such as this where a case can be made.  If you are taking drugs about which you do not understand all of the implications or have been on a course of medication for too long a period, then it may be possible that you have a claim against your GP or hospital.
