Knee and Ankle Injuries
If you have suffered a knee or ankle injury you may be entitled to an award in the following brackets.
Knee injuries
At the higher end of this bracket are serious knee injuries where there has been disruption of the joint, gross ligamentous damage, considerable pain and loss of function. At the middle to lower end are injuries where the pain may be permanent coupled with limited movement.
The higher end of this bracket includes injuries involving dislocation, torn cartilage resulting in minor instability, weakness or other mild future disability. At the lower end are similar, less serious injuries and lacerations, twisting or bruising injuries.
Other factors affecting the award level include your recovery period and any ongoing aching or discomfort you may be experiencing.
Ankle injuries
Severe to very severe - £20,500 to £45,750
The higher end of the bracket includes transmalleolar fractures resulting in deformity and the risk of future injury which might necessitate a below-knee amputation and bilateral ankle fractures causing degeneration of the joints at a young age. At the lower end are injuries requiring extensive treatment periods or where pins and plates have been inserted and there is significant residual disability.
Other factors affecting the award level include the impact the injury has had on your ability to walk and any residual disabilities or associated problems you have developed as a result.
Modest to moderate - up to £17,500
The higher end of the bracket includes fractures and tears resulting in less serious disabilities than above. More minor fractures and sprains will attract a lower award which will vary depending on your recovery period, any discomfort you experience and the possibility of you developing later osteoarthritis.
