A plot of agricultural land in south Warwickshire has been sold for £6,450 an acre – a possible record for the county.
The 100-acre plot of land, which was part of Stapenhall Farm, Deppers Bridge, in Harbury, has sold for £645,000, the equivalent of almost £16,000 a hectare.
Two other lots, including a house and other farm buildings as well as land, went for £900,000.
More than 100 potential buyers attended the sale at the Great Western pub in Deppers Bridge, which was conducted by Warwick-based agents Margetts.
David Bussey, a partner at Margetts, said: “There was fierce competition between neighbouring farms wanting to add to their existing land holding and it made for a very exciting sale.
“We are celebrating our 200th year in business and I doubt there has ever been a sale like this in the history of the company.”
Paul Rice, Head of the Farming and Rural Business Unit at Leamington-based law firm Wright Hassall, who acted on the sale is now trying to establish if it is a record.
“We do not believe that a block of bare land of this size in Warwickshire, which does not have development potential or which is not pony pasture, has ever gone for such a high price per acre.
“The price was well in excess of the guide price and the regional average and perhaps the fact that this went to auction contributed to that.”
