Wright Hassall has handed over its largest ever fundraising cheque to a cancer charity.
Wright Hassall in Leamington Spa raised nearly £6,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support after organising a series of events throughout 2007.
The 200-strong firm, based on Olympus Avenue, held coffee mornings, raffles and a corporate quiz to raise funds for the charity, which supports people touched by cancer and fights for better cancer care.
Wright Hassall chose to support Macmillan after being inspired by the individual efforts of legal secretary Rebecca Mushing. The 21-year-old lost her father Philip to cancer in 2006 when he was just 45 – and since then, her family have raised more than £10,000 for the cause.
Rebecca said: “I’m ever so pleased at how well the fundraising has gone. We have raised so much and to break previous records is fantastic.
“Macmillan is a charity which motivates people to donate and we have had support from staff and clients alike. Supporting it is important to me and having my employers involved was great because it meant we could make a bigger difference than I could alone.
“It’s great to have raised the money and we’re also pleased to have helped raise the profile of Macmillan to other companies and clients in the Midlands.”
Bernadette Halton, of Macmillan Cancer Support, has helped Wright Hassall to organise events throughout the year. She said the total raised was hugely beneficial to the charity.
She said: “The relationship we had with Wright Hassall was fantastic. The ‘world’s biggest coffee morning’ event they held was one of the biggest in the area and contributed towards £136,000 raised in Coventry and Warwickshire.
“It’s really important that businesses do back a charity for a year. It means firms get to give something back to the community, and with cancer, they know it touches many people’s hearts.
“It’s not just about fundraising. We have been helped with finding venues for events and with promoting the charity and our work.”
