Burleigh pottery acquired by Denby

Wright Hassall has acted on a deal to save one of Stoke-on-Trent’s most famous pottery producers.

The 200-strong Leamington Spa solicitors advised Denby, the famous UK pottery manufacturer, on the acquisition of Burgess Dorling & Leigh, which produces Burleigh pottery at the city’s Middleport Pottery.

Wright Hassall had previously advised Valco Capital Partners, the private equity arm of restructuring specialist Hilco on their acquisition of Denby Pottery in 2009.

Robert Lee, head of Wright Hassall’s corporate finance team, said: “Burleigh Pottery has a long and illustrious history not only in Stoke-on-Trent but far further afield.

“We are delighted to be involved in a deal which secures its long-term future and will see the brand prosper again.

“The acquisition involves the listed Middleport Pottery building, along with all company branding and trademarks.

“Denby is now planning to reinvigorate the brand, build on its existing successes, and end the insecurity which has surrounded the company for some time.”

Burleigh was founded in 1851 and moved to the Middleport factory in 1889. Denby celebrated its 200th anniversary last year and employs more than 600 staff.
