The Wright Hassall Regency Run has raised a record £25,000 for Warwickshire charities.
The 10km run through Leamington attracted 1,800 runners on a snowy Sunday morning – the highest entry number since it started in 2005 – and the money raised by entry fees and sponsorship will now be divided between worthy causes in the area.
Despite three inches of snow falling overnight, race organisers Leamington Round Table ensured the course was cleared of snow and safe to run.
Ryan Kenny of Integrated Hydraulics and Godiva Harriers finished first with a record time of 32.26, and was closely followed by Alistair Lockey and Dennis Walmsley of Bourton RR in 33.51 and 33.52 respectively.
Rachel Buxton of Godiva Harriers was the first female to finish, coming in at 39.39, ahead of Monica Williamson of Leamington C&AC (40.09) and Lucie Custance of Kettering Town Harriers (40.46).
Meanwhile, the first winners of the Corporate Cup were Integrated Hydraulics A, who overcame a tough challenge from Wright Hassall.
The run, which was started by Mayor of Leamington Cllr David Greenwood and Olympian Dave Long, attracted hundreds of spectators along the course route, which finished at Mill Gardens in Willes Road.
Russell Hall, from organisers Leamington Round Table, praised the participants in this year’s run.
He said: “The run seems to grow in popularity each year and to reach 1,800 runners is fantastic. Wherever you go, people are out running – and that’s great news for the sport.
“We needed to add 300 extra places this year to meet demand and it wasn’t long before they were full. It all led to a great day, with runners of all levels enjoying a challenging and enjoyable course.”
Law firm Wright Hassall has backed the race since it began in 2005 and was one of several teams taking part.
Jane Senior, of Wright Hassall, said: “To raise £25,000 for local charities is a truly remarkable achievement and we are very proud to support the event during another record-breaking year.
“The run has provided Leamington with a great event for both competitive and non-competitive runners, and a chance for people to take part and have fun.”
