Businesses in Coventry and Warwickshire that discriminate against people because of their age were being warned that they will soon find themselves on the wrong side of the law.
New legislation is set to come into force next year that aims to put a stop to discrimination against older and younger workers, with many firms unaware of the change.
Suki Harrar, a partner in Leamington firm Wright Hassall’s Employment Law Unit, briefed local companies on the issue at the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, September 7.
The ‘Legs and Regs’ seminar gave firms the chance to put questions to the leading lawyer and will provide an insight into the imminent changes to the law.
Suki said: “The workplace is governed by laws preventing discrimination against things such as disability, race, religion or sex.
“And with new legislation coming into force next year, discrimination against someone because of their age will also be outlawed.
“I have very close dealings with dozens of human resources and management teams around the region, and many of them were unaware of this new legislation.
“I have been given many of them advice on how the new law could affect them and I thought the issue was so important that it should be discussed more widely.
“That is why I have chosen that as the main focus for the ‘Legs and Regs’ seminar with the Chamber of Commerce in September.”
Suki's colleague, Natalie Griffiths, highlighted other aspects of employment law during the event including TUPE.
