Sinking sea cadets saved

The Leamington and Warwick Sea Cadets fear they will sink without more corporate funding.

The cadets have just received donations from law firm Wright Hassall and estate agents Malcolm Hawkesford to help support their activities.

The Leamington and Warwick Sea Cadets survive purely on donations as they receive no Government funding.

Around 30 youngsters gain a variety of skills from attending the Sea Cadets associated with nautical training and leadership qualities as well as taking part in sporting activities.

Jim Weavill, one of the organisers for the Sea Cadets, said: “We are extremely grateful to Wright Hassall and Malcolm Hawkesford for their very kind donations.

“The money will help keep us going in the short-term, but in the long-term we do need assistance to survive.

“We do a lot of great work with youngsters from Leamington and Warwick and give them some superb life experiences.

“Ideally, we would like to find a corporate sponsor that could support us for a whole year.”

The Leamington and Warwick Cadets are based off Adelaide Road in Leamington Spa, just a short distance from the offices of Wright Hassall and Malcolm Hawkesford.

Jane Senior, a partner at Wright Hassall, said: “The Sea Cadets came to us and asked for help towards funding.

“They do some great work with local youngsters and we are delighted to help them.

“It would be a real shame if the Sea Cadets were not able to survive because it does very good work and gives youngsters excellent opportunities.”

James Hawkesford, of Malcolm Hawkesford, said: “Hopefully other companies will be able to follow suit and lend their support.”
