Small and medium size businesses tapped into the knowledge of the head of Europe’s largest independent IT company at an event hosted by a Midland law firm.
Sir Peter Rigby, chairman and chief executive of SCC, and one of Europe’s top entrepreneurs addressed those looking to grow their companies at Wright Hassall’s fourth Wright Business Breakfast.
Launched in March, Wright Business Breakfast seminars are designed to give small and medium enterprises the opportunity to hear from successful business professionals and legal experts in order to help them learn about how to develop such companies.
Sir Peter spoke about the process of building a new business and the importance of being creative in difficult market conditions.
He said: “Taking any business from a modest beginning to a world class organisation is a thrilling and action packed journey.
“Business has never been more challenging than it is today, more than ever it is not enough just to have a good idea or a product. This has to be coupled with investment, marketing, sales effort, technical support and after sales service to ensure sustainable growth and profitability.
“To find and keep good customers, partners and alliances in a challenging environment demands not only excellent customer relationships but also agility and vision.
“You must always look to introduce innovation through new services and fresh ways of doing business but most importantly always have a close eye on what your competition is doing.”
Nick Abell, senior partner at Wright Hassall, said Sir Peter was the perfect fit for the event given the way he built up his business and the success he has achieved.
He said: “It is well documented how Sir Peter built his business up from an initial investment of just £2,000 to one that now turns over £.3billion.
“His case is a perfect example of how to develop a business that can grow and grow, from relatively low-key beginnings.
“He shared some his of experiences from a hugely successful career in business and I know all in attendance found it very useful.
“In particular he gave an insight into some of the methods he used to lay the foundations for his business empire.
“But I think the aspects of his speech people found most interesting were his views on how to manage a business and keep it moving in the right direction in times of recession.
“Everyone who was there will take something away from the seminar which will help to bring their particular business on and that is exactly what we are trying to achieve so the event was a huge success and I would like to thank Sir Peter once again.”
