James is an experienced commercial lawyer and has practiced extensively in private practice and in-house, the latter within the financial services industry.   He is a member of the firm’s Logistics, Technology and Financial Services sector groups.

He has a particular interest in outsourcing and procurement and has advised clients on public and private sector contracts.  In relation to financial services, James has advised on material outsourcing agreements including the accompanying regulatory issues.

James also advises on technology law including e-commerce, software development, software licences, IT system supply and data protection.  He also specialises in the licensing and exploitation of intellectual property rights including advising on confidentiality, merchandising, sponsorship, publishing and trade mark agreements.

James has considerable experience of advising clients on trading arrangements generally including route to market strategy and joint ventures.  In addition to providing advice on conditions of sale and purchase, he also advises on supply, distribution, agency and consultancy agreements including competition law compliance.

Background

Prior to joining Wright Hassall LLP, James was Head of Legal at a leading life assurance and pension group, where he advised senior management on corporate, commercial, technology, outsourcing and financial services regulatory issues.

James studied law at Sheffield University and completed a Diploma in Intellectual Property and Practice at Bristol University in 1997.  James qualified as a solicitor in 1991.

Interests

Outside of work James enjoys cycling, tennis and travel.
