Rhys specialises in the following:

  • The protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights including particular experience in:
    • Music copyright, acting for both record company and/or artist;
    • Design right and registered design infringement actions;
    • Trade mark infringement and passing off claims;
    • Patent claims, particularly in relation to mechanical and satellite communication patents; and
    • Misuse of confidential information. 
  • Technology disputes including:
    • Disputes over the supply and installation of IT software and hardware systems;
    • Website design disputes;
    • Domain name disputes; and
    • Protection of intellectual property rights on-line.
  • Rhys also has extensive experience in dealing with commercial contract disputes particularly those involving intellectual property rights.

  • Ongoing High Court proceedings in respect of unregistered design right (2010)
  • Advised on various matters involving celebrity image rights (2010);
  • Advised on exploitation of patented green energy technology (2010);
  • Advised on copyright in re-mastered sound recordings (2010);
  • Daventry District Council v Daventry & District Housing (10 day Chancery Division trial, 2010)
  • Advised on copyright in training materials and website content (2010);
  • Advised on numerous unregistered design right claims for major lighting manufacturer (2010)
  • Successful settlement of High Court patent proceedings involving towed vehicle security device (2009);
  • Obtained resolution of trade mark dispute relating to household name automotive brand;
  • Successfully defended registered design infringement proceedings in a flat bed recovery vehicle;
  • Woodhouse UK plc v Aquila Design – Registered design and unregistered design right in street lighting lantern and bracket [2006] RPC 1;
  • Successful settlement of copyright claim in song music and lyrics;
  • Advised on unregistered Community design in stitching on jeans pocket sold by major high street retailer;
  • Trade mark infringement claims involving counterfeit Microsoft software

Rhys has delivered a number of training seminars to different audiences and writes articles on intellectual property.

Background

Rhys gained his law degree from Southampton University and subsequently trained with DLA. He has a Postgraduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Bristol University. He became a partner at Wright Hassall in 2003.

Interests

Playing and watching most sports, particularly football (as a life long fan of Ipswich Town FC), golf and travel.
