Richard specialises in the following:

Commercial Litigation including:

  • corporate litigation relating to sale and purchase disputes
  • breaches of warranty
  • commercial contract disputes including banking and finance

Richard has acted for clients in a wide range of disputes in this area and is known for his commercial approach and ability to find solutions.

Professional Negligence including:

  • claims relating to, and against, solicitors, accountants, surveyors, architects, insurance brokers, financial advisers and vets.
  • Insurance and insurance terms and coverage issues

Richard has been involved in many types of case involving claims in excess of £5 million, acting for lenders, businesses and individuals.

Sports law including:

  • Competitor discipline and disciplinary proceedings
  • sporting bodies on competitor discipline
  • sports tribunal advice on competition rules and regulations 

Cases in which he has been involved include the following:

  • Court of Arbitration for Sport – BEF -v- FEI, Richard acted for the BEF and BSJA in an appeal to CAS relating to the decision of the FEI to relegate the Great Britain Show Jumping Team from the Top League of the Nations Cup.  The appeal was successful.  
  • International Paralympic Committee -v- World Anti-Doping Agency & Brockman. Richard acted for the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) and Mr Brockman. The case was decided in favour of Mr Brockman.
  • Sports Resolutions UK - Richard has acted on several cases before the Sports Resolutions panel all of which have been successful acting for National Governing Bodies.
  • Sports Tribunal work - several cases advising sports governing bodies on disciplinary and regulatory issues, including breaches of competition rules, child protection issues and use of prohibited substances by competitors.

Richard has wide experience in dealing with High Court actions, Arbitration and Mediation, Alternative Dispute Resolution and domestic and international tribunals including:

  • Midland Packaging Ltd v Haines Watts. High Court and Court of Appeal. A claim against accountants relating to negligent tax advice.
  • Harrison v Swindell - Solicitors Fiduciary Duty case.
