5. What do I do if I want to be in business as a sole trader?

You do not need to form a separate business entity to start in business as a sole trader. You are required to advise HM Revenue and Customs, and will need to choose a business name (see 15). If you have been receiving any benefits, you will also need to notify your social security office.

Depending on your circumstances, there may be other legal issues that should be dealt with at this time (see 20).
