4. Can I make a job offer subject to successful completion of a probationary period?

Yes. Three to six months is typical, and should be long enough to allow you to judge whether the employee is willing and able to do the job. It will also give you time to take remedial action before the end of a year of continuous service, if the employee's performance declines during or after the end of the probationary period. After the end of the first year of continuous service, employees are eligible to claim unfair dismissal if dismissed.
