Making a Will - why use a solicitor?

To put it simply – to make sure what you want to happen actually gets done! There are no restrictions on who can draft a will so, unless your will is prepared by a solicitor or legal executive (who would be covered by professional indemnity insurance), you have no redress if anything goes wrong. Many home-made wills and wills drawn up by will writing companies are invalid or incorrectly worded - storing up future problems which often cannot be easily rectified.

Reasons why home-made wills or badly drafted wills fail:

• gifts failing because a witness happens to be married to a beneficiary
• not all of the estate is disposed of
• gifts can attract Inheritance Tax unless you specifically state otherwise!
• not witnessed or signed correctly
• remarriage (which invalidates a will).
