Communication is critically important in every single part of our lives and yet we all tend to take it for granted. My talk takes us back to absolute basics with some hilarious ‘real life’ illustrations of just how wrong communication can go if we don’t pay enough attention to what we say and how we say it. I’ll be looking at the different ways in which people give and receive information and the pitfalls to look out for. I’ll also be discussing all modern forms of communication and debating the merits and downfalls of each, from texting to Skyping.
I’ve had to learn about communication as an incredibly important part of my everyday life with 6 autistic children and another with severe Dysxlexia, some of the situations we have ended up in have led to an accumulation of extreme examples of when communication is NOT effective! I discuss communication from the perspective of a person who has lived it and learnt some very harsh lessons from the misuse of it, rather than someone who understands the theory only. Sometimes real life can teach us more than anything else!
