Kevin Hall, VAT partner at Wright Hassall, has successfully defended a gastropub against a £170k fraud accusation by HMRC.
Kevin was advising the business’ accountants who had recently inherited the work for this client. The case was complex due to concerns with the previous accountant’s advice.
The newly appointed accountant was therefore also at risk if the gastropub had lost its case. Our win defended two clients in one and highlights our comprehensive service for a client from the outset: defending the VAT position technically, providing tax litigation support and professional negligence expertise.
The process of dealing with the death of a loved one is usually talked about in emotional terms, and understandably so. But it is also a hugely complex logistical and administrative task that most people are unaware of.
The new penalties will apply to VAT accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2023. This is a deferral by the government who had announced in the latest Autumn Statement a start date of 1 April 2022.
