John specialises in estate and succession planning for business owners, private individuals, landowners, farmers and farming families. He advises on how to minimise your Inheritance Tax liability through will planning, setting up trusts to receive any death benefits from their pension fund, setting up lifetime trusts to hold some company shares and development land for the benefit of their children and grandchildren.
John enjoys the challenge of devising bespoke planning to achieve tax efficient succession planning and asset protection for businesses and individuals.
John is heavily involved in the local business community as a board member of Coventry & Warwickshire First, a director of Kenilworth & District Agricultural Society, serving on the Warwickshire Farmers’ Ball committee as well as his position as clerk to Southam United Charities and the William Riley Charity.
- Acted for farming clients in the administration of their parents’ estates. This has involved succession planning to protect their assets from a future charge to Inheritance Tax and protect assets from long term care fees, to protect the business assets from any future divorce settlement. We have also transferred a property to the son in such a way as to prevent a charge to Capital Gains Tax.
- Assisted a family in setting up option agreements for the purchase of shares in the family business and advising on the business structure to ensure the business is tax efficient as possible.
- Acted for a number of business owners’ estates such as an estate circa £6m with multiple cross border legal issues requiring detailed negotiation with HMRC on the availability of business property relief, tax treatment of pension policies and properties.
